Just like someone looking for a home, each person needs to be listened to and accompanied in order to discover where God wants their life to find its home.

Finding a Home, Not Selling One

In vocational accompaniment, a subtle temptation can arise: to understand ministry as a recruitment strategy, as though our task were to “convince” someone to embrace a particular way of life. But vocation is neither sold nor promoted. It is discovered. And in that process, our mission is not to persuade, but to help each person recognize the place God has prepared for them.

“Vocation is neither sold nor promoted. It is discovered”.

Two ways of understanding a call

In the real estate world, there are two figures that can help shed light on this question: the property developer and the real estate agency. At first glance, both work in the same field, but their underlying logic is very different.

A property developer is tied to a particular home. Their natural goal is to present its strengths, highlight its advantages, and emphasize what makes the property attractive. That makes sense: their perspective is inevitably connected to a specific product.

A real estate agency, on the other hand, works according to a different logic. It is not tied to a single house, but to the person who is searching. Its task is to listen, understand their needs, accompany the process, and help them find what truly fits their life.

This apparently technical distinction sheds surprising light on how we understand vocational ministry. Because we are not dealing with a product that needs to be sold, but with a life that needs to be discovered.

Vocation is not something to promote

When vocational ministry is understood primarily as promotion, it runs the risk of being reduced to a well-crafted message, an attractive presentation, or a persistent invitation. But vocation is not born from advertising impact; it is born from an inner encounter with God.

This raises a question we cannot avoid: are we helping people listen to the voice of God, or are we trying to defend a particular way of life? Announcing a house is not the same as accompanying someone as they discover where their life can truly find a home.

The Gospel does not present recruitment strategies, but personal encounters. Jesus does not impose paths; He looks, calls, and accompanies: “Come and you will see” (Jn 1:39). Vocation always arises from an experience of inner truth, not from external pressure.

That is why vocational ministry is not about convincing people, but about opening spaces where God can be heard: spaces of silence, prayer, accompaniment, and discernment.

“Announcing a house is not the same as accompanying someone as they discover where their life can truly find a home”.

Accompany, don’t convince

The true promoter of vocation is not someone who sells a particular way of life, but someone who helps another person discern it. Their role resembles much more closely that of an agency that listens than that of a developer presenting a property.

To accompany means to step away from the center. It means ceasing to be the protagonist of the process and becoming a discreet mediator. It means accepting that the vocation does not belong to us, but to God, and that we can only cooperate in helping it come to light.

In this sense, vocational ministry becomes an exercise in humility. It is not about filling empty spaces, but helping each person discover whether that space is truly theirs. And if it is not, that too is part of the truth of the journey.

“It is not about filling empty spaces, but helping each person discover whether that space is truly theirs”.

Discovering the home where life belongs

Perhaps the deepest image is not that of selling or looking for a house, but of discovering where each person’s life can truly find a home. Because every human life is, at its deepest level, a search for home.

Vocation is precisely that: the place where life finds meaning, where the heart comes to rest without ever ceasing to move, where our personal mission is illuminated by God.

Augustinian Recollect spirituality, with its emphasis on interiority and community, reminds us that this home is not found in isolation. It is discerned together, recognized in shared prayer, and confirmed through the inner peace that God gradually gives.

For this reason, vocational ministry does not sell paths. It accompanies searches. It does not impose answers. It helps people ask genuine questions. It does not construct closed itineraries. It helps each person discover the home God has already prepared for their life.

And perhaps the decisive question is not what we are offering, but whether we are truly helping people listen to a deeper question: where does God want my life to find its home? In that silent, discreet, and luminous answer, vocation begins to become visible.

“Vocational ministry does not sell paths.
