By grasping at life, we lose it; by entrusting it to Christ, we find it. What can this mean, except that there is one kind of safety according to the world and another according to God? When the martyrs were tested and forced to choose between denying Christ and facing death, those who tried to save themselves by the world\u2019s measure denied Christ and lost what mattered most. Those who appeared to lose everything for Christ found their life in him. Into whose hands could they place their lives more securely than the hands of their Creator? Who can preserve what exists except the One who called it into being?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;\">They followed Christ through many trials for the sake of his name. Blessed losses! They were like seed scattered and buried in the soil. The harvest cannot yet be seen when the seed is sown, but hope already lives within it. Someone he deeply admires and loves says that he is going to surrender himself, be condemned unjustly and die. Peter hears the suffering, but he cannot yet grasp the promise of resurrection \u2014and that changes everything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 16px;\">The resurrection is the strength of God\u2019s love overcoming, through love itself, what sin tried to destroy on the cross.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 16px;\">Christ is not simply a moral teacher or a coach offering rules for self-improvement. He comes to give us an entirely new life, beginning here and now. The way into that life is concrete: <strong style=\"color:#0b7d8c;\">offer your life, take up the cross and follow him<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 16px;\">To deny ourselves is to loosen the grip of resentment, deception, disorder and falsehood. It does not mean erasing who we are; it means refusing to remain enslaved to ego and learning to live from the freedom of a renewed heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 16px;\">Taking up the cross means remaining faithful in hardship, caring for those who are vulnerable, answering God\u2019s call, refusing to repay evil with evil, and standing for truth and justice in a wounded world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 16px;\">Following Jesus means choosing a way of life that goes against the current and welcomes conversion day after day. It is neither fanaticism nor empty enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 16px;\">Peter tried to protect what seemed sensible and safe, yet he missed the way of God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;\"><strong style=\"color:#0b7d8c;\">The cross is not failure<\/strong>. You are a stumbling block to me, because you are thinking in a merely human way, not as God thinks.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-size:18px;margin:0 0 12px;line-height:1.8;\">For Peter, hearing those words from Jesus must have been painful and disorienting. Correction often hurts, as medicine stings when it reaches a wound. Yet Jesus is not rejecting Peter; he is healing his way of seeing. Peter must learn to think, look and live with the mind of Christ rather than by the measures of the crowd. <strong style=\"color:#0b7d8c;\">Following Jesus asks for a radical change of perspective.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:19px;margin:0 0 36px;color:#0b7d8c;font-style:italic;text-align:center;font-weight:bold;\">What way of thinking needs to change so that I can see my life through the eyes of Jesus?<\/p>\n\n<blockquote style=\"border-left:4px solid #e8824f;background:#fff;margin:0 0 20px;padding:22px 26px;font-family:Georgia,serif;font-size:19px;font-style:italic;color:#1a1a2e;line-height:1.5;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;\"><p style=\"margin:0;\">\u201cWhat good is it to gain the whole world and lose your very self?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-size:18px;margin:0 0 12px;line-height:1.8;\">With one simple question, Jesus exposes the weight of our ambitions. The desire to gain everything can demand an unbearable price: our own life. The Gospel does not ask us to abandon every hope or project, but it does warn us not to become lost inside them.
